OK, I'll bite. One issue is whether the performers are Southern, literally, which means born in the South. I've lived in the South for more than 20 years, or more than 30 if you count Maryland, but I'll never be considered a Southerner. Second issue has to do with sound. Creedence Clearwater "sounds" Southern, and I thought for years that John Fogerty must be from Louisiana--but he's actually from the other LA, Los Angeles.
